DJ 3000 presents "Broken Research II"

With the release of the “Broken Research II” compilation, Motech Records continues in it’s pursuit to expand beyond the unwritten boundaries of electronic music. While many of Motech’s 12” and artist released full lengths are dance floor oriented, the “Broken Research” series is a more dedicated experience meant for the listener rather than the dancer.

“Broken Research II” expands further on the idea put forth by its predecessor. This compilation shows off the wide reach of Motech Records talent ranging from jazz fusion to spoken word to heady electronic to downtempo and hip hop.  Much like the original, “Broken Research II” adheres to DJ 3000’s original principle of “keeping it in-house,” as all of the tracks on this compilation are from close friends and associates of the Motech Records label.

Contributing to his first “Broken Research” project Deviant (Arepaz Immigrante Orchestra) drops “Caballo,” a percussive, up-tempo clinic in rhythm and movement. Shawn Snell returns to the BR series with “La Quila” a sensory electronic track that is composed of equal parts Mumbai and Detroit. “Broken Research” veteran DJ Compufunk returns with two inflective pieces, “Goshiki Sunset” and “Future Vision.” Like all of his previous releases on Motech, Compufunk’s intricate technical complexity is not lacking on either of these tracks.

DJ 3000 makes another “Broken Research” appearance with “Save My Soul,” a slower than usual tempo piece that blends soulful vocal samples with a meandering rhythm and “Grote Gracht Guitar” which was inspired by the sounds of passing street musicians. Vino, a newcomer to the BR series, delivers two masterful downtempo pieces, “Public Opinion” and “First Sunbeams”, both of which are superbly rhythmic and playful at the same time. Detroit veteran Gary Martin returns to the series to deliver “Virgin Sacrifice” a carnally driven track with tribal percussion and vocals that mix perfectly.

Esteban Adame brings his jazz fusion project Tuesday Night Squad to the BR series. “(I don’t have the track name for the TNS track)” brings an amazing, live instrument jam to the “Broken Research” series. This track will turn some unsuspecting heads. Opening and closing “Broken Research II” are “Tear Down The Walls” and “My Dreams Sound Like This.” Two break driven, yet mind expanding downtempo hip hop tracks from Detroit-trained, Chicago-bred ID, who also appeared on the original “Broken Research” project.

The roster of Motech Records has shown time and again that regardless of genre it can deliver thought inspiring and technically challenging music. Our goal has always been to step over the lines drawn in the sand even where no lines exist.

Our movement continues, please join us.
